Title: Commercial Offtake and Policy Intern
Reports To: VP Power Marketing and Origination
Location: Boston, MA
Description: Flatiron Energy is bidding multiple energy storage projects into state and utility offtake opportunities in 2025. This internship will provide critical support to the Commercial team as they develop compelling bids for their projects that highlight the unique benefits of their portfolio. In addition, the role will provide policy and regulatory support to the team, researching and tracking emerging issues in Northeastern electricity markets and states.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support RFP responses and bid development for the Flatiron Energy storage portfolio
- Support drafting, compilation and editing of Flatiron’s bids into state RFP processes
- Coordinate with the Origination Manager to support gathering and tracking bidding information from Development, Operations and Finance team
- Brainstorm creative advantages unique to individual projects
- Ensure quality and consistency of bids is maintained across multiple project bids
- Research new market and evolving policy opportunities in Northeastern markets, including ISO-NE and NYISO.
- Researching evolving state policy opportunities (exact issues will depend on relevant policy issues as of internship start-date)
- Tracking developments in relevant wholesale markets (exact issues will depend on relevant policy issues as of internship start-date)
- Attending relevant trade group calls and updating team on changing policy landscape
- Competitive Analysis of Energy Storage Market Landscape:
- Researching Interconnection queues and other data sources to understand competitive landscape for Flatiron’s project pipeline
- Data Analysis on recent pricing trends, development costs, and other relevant quantitative factors for energy storage projects
Expected Learnings and Takeaways
- Understanding of the energy storage development process
- Understanding of the energy storage policy landscape in Northeastern states
- Understanding of wholesale energy markets and specialized knowledge in at least one topic area
- Understanding of how clean energy developers enter contracts for offtake with state or utility counterparties
- Understanding of how clean energy projects bid projects in competitive procurements, including how projects are marketed and the financial inputs that drive pricing
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in an energy, economics or policy related field
- Strong educational background in energy, policy and analysis
- Demonstrated interest in climate change and clean energy development
- Strong writing, editing and communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- High level of attention to detail
Additional Qualifications:
- Familiarity with wholesale power markets, particularly ISO-NE and NYISO
- Experience working with a clean energy developer or at a sustainability-focused NGO
