Speak for the Trees, Boston, is a nonprofit focused on the size and health of the urban tree canopy in Boston. We currently work at the community level by engaging people in appreciating and advocating for their neighborhood trees. We do this through plantings, stewardship, and education. Our aim is to build and empower a network of residents to value and protect their local urban forest. SFTT is a small organization comprising of 7 staff and several interns.

This internship position will expand our outreach in the community through several possible projects:

  1. Developing marketing and outreach material such as social media, newsletters, and blog posts
  2. Assisting in the development of research and advocacy campaigns both locally and state-wide focused on issues of urban forestry and tree equity
  3. Researching and writing grant opportunities
  4. Assisting staff in the development of programs, curriculum, and other projects.

Potential responsibilities include:

  • Social media / outreach, including:
    1. writing newsletter
    2. updating website
    3. creating a social media calendar
    4. populating our different social media channels
  • Supporting community outreach work by coordinating, attending, and taking notes at meetings
  • Assisting in event management, including tree giveaways, tree plantings, and our Teen Urban Tree Corps program
  • Translation services (esp. in Spanish) are a big plus!
  • Organizing “tree walks” in diverse neighborhoods throughout the city.
  • Researching and developing a heritage tree program for Boston
  • Additional projects are possible, depending on the intern's interest and availability.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Weekly meetings with staff (either in person or via phone / zoom) to provide regular updates.
  • The team is small and committed to our mission. We are new to this and wear many hats, often learning and creating on the fly. We are seeking an intern to do the same.
  • The intern should feel comfortable working independently for the duration of the internship. We are looking for a go-getter!
  • Strong people skills are preferred.
  • Hours are flexible, with expectation that some community events are held on weekends on a semi-regular basis.
  • Basic skills in GoogleDocs.
  • Knowing Canva a plus
  • Fluency in a common non-English language spoken in Boston a big plus!

  • Financial compensation of $16-$18 / hour. Fall and Spring is 12-15 hours per week; Summer is 30-35 hours / week.
  • The internship will run from either September through December (Fall term) or January through May (Spring term), or May through August (Summer term) and will align with expectations and requirements of the intern's program and requirements.
