2026 Massachusetts Future Grid Event - Local Grid Services in Action: Charting the Path Forward
MassCEC and ACT will host a 2026 Future Grid Event focused on local grid services in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is in an important phase in the development of local grid services. Local grid services address specific, location‑based constraints on the distribution system (rather than the bulk system). By reducing or shifting electricity use in specific places during local peak periods, distributed energy resources (DERs) can help utilities make better use of existing infrastructure and potentially defer or avoid costly distribution grid upgrades. Since distribution system investments and upgrades are drivers of overall grid costs, local grid services represent an emerging tool to support a reliable grid while helping improve energy affordability. The event will bring stakeholders together to reflect on the evolution of grid services in Massachusetts since the Grid Services Study was published in Fall 2025, including the launch of utility Grid Services Compensation Fund pilots, the role of various policy and regulatory tools in maximizing the value of grid services to all residents of the state, and opportunities from innovative technological solutions.

Who attends?
The series convenes stakeholders from across the Massachusetts energy ecosystem to explore key grid-related topics, share insights, and develop actionable pathways forward. Participants include public and private sector leaders, advocacy organizations, utilities, technology providers, entrepreneurs, community representatives, and academics.
What's the structure?
Each event combines informational presentations and expert panels with facilitated small-group discussions, enabling participants to exchange perspectives, build relationships, and collaboratively identify challenges, opportunities, and next steps. These conversations are designed to break down silos, elevate diverse perspectives, and support more coordinated progress toward a future grid.
What's the result?
Each event results in a summary report that captures key insights and helps spur future action.
