FLxDER Inc. is an early-stage startup developing cloud-based electric vehicle (EV) charging optimization software for fleets. By addressing shortcomings of conventional approaches to “smart-charging” and grid integration, FLxDER will enable more cost-effective fleet operation, will lessen utility distribution system impacts and costs, and will facilitate the rapid adoption of EVs that is so critical to climate change mitigation. Using a unique power-flow optimization approach, FLxDER will coordinate fleet EV and stationary battery charging jointly with co-located energy resources (solar PV etc.), including reactive power compensation capabilities.
 
FLxDER is looking for a full stack software developer to play a major role in the development of a prototype of an exciting new cloud-based service that optimizes EV charging for fleets. The position is temporary (six months), and part-time with flexible hours, with opportunities for equity sharing. We hope to move this to a long-term role contingent upon additional funding.
 
This prototype will integrate with an external EV charging solution provider API with the capability to collect data and control equipment, will configure and co-optimize the operation of simulated EV charging, other distributed energy resource (DER) equipment (e.g., PV and battery inverters) and the utility grid, and provide a range of dashboard controls, analytics, and visualizations for end-users.
 
This role provides an opportunity to collaborate with FLxDER’s experts in energy, operations research, and economics, to get exposure to complex and challenging problems involving cloud resources, software, and systems integration in the rapidly growing EV infrastructure and smart grid industries, and to grow with our young company.

Job Duties/Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities:

  • Be the member of our startup to develop much of the first prototype of a novel cloud-based electric vehicle charging and distributed energy management application
  • Maintain and debug software components
  • Interact with another member of our team to help them structure their components to work within the larger application
  • Integrate the application with at least one third-party interface (RESTful / API sandbox environment, to be selected as part of the effort)
  • Develop end-to-end tests and unit tests
Qualifications: 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High energy and motivated learner
  • Innovative team player who thrives in unstructured entrepreneurial environments
  • 5 years of software development experience developing cloud-based IoT or similar applications
  • Proven development track record with Linux full stack applications and AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with RESTful services and APIs
  • Comfortable programming in least one of these languages: C/C++, JavaScript, Python, C#
  • Relational and time series database experience
  • Software architecture and design experience
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Good presentation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Prior familiarity with data visualization libraries is a plus

Other requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering preferred
  • Experience with smart grid applications, electricity distribution systems, EV charging, or Distributed Energy Resources is a plus
  • Applicants located in the metro Boston area preferred
