MassCEC’s Announces Next Round of Energy Efficiency Trainings through the MassGREEN Initiative

MassGREEN Receives $20,000 Donation from AT&T Foundation; Contribution  Will Help Develop New Courses and Training Opportunities

BOSTON- The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) today announced the third round of weatherization workshops under MassGREEN, the statewide energy efficiency and building science initiative that provides energy efficiency workforce training for individuals and contracting firms throughout the Commonwealth. MassCEC also announced that the AT&T has donated $20,000 to support MassGREEN.

“On behalf of the Patrick-Murray administration, thanks to AT&T for supporting MassGREEN, the Commonwealth’s signature clean energy job training initiative,” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Richard K. Sullivan Jr., who chairs the MassCEC board of directors. “Partnerships such as this with the Massachusetts business community are essential to ensuring the caliber of trained workers needed to realize Governor Patrick’s vision for a clean energy future.”

“MassGREEN continues to utilize the Commonwealth’s academic assets to help build a strong workforce that will help achieve our weatherization and energy efficiency goals,” said MassCEC Executive Director Patrick Cloney. “It’s great to see organizations like the AT&T Foundation committing to the Commonwealth’s workforce development goals.”

Through its philanthropic initiatives and partnerships, AT&T has a long history of supporting initiatives that promote sustainability, create learning opportunities, and promote academic and economic achievement, and address community needs.

MassGREEN is a nearly $3 million initiative to coordinate energy efficiency workforce training programs under one statewide clearinghouse.  Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) is the lead administrator for energy efficiency training activities, materials and services, and coordinates job training at regional centers based at STCC as well as Bristol, North Shore, and Greenfield Community Colleges. In the coming months, job training centers will be based at Roxbury, Berkshire, and Quinsigamond Community Colleges as well.

This spring, MassGREEN will offer weatherization technician courses at all seven regional centers, as well as a 30-hour Weatherization Business Development course targeting new contractors and construction firms seeking to offer more dynamic services in weatherization and energy efficiency as part of their business models.

MassGREEN recently completed its first round of training, offering a 78-hour Weatherization Technician Course designed for people with little or no background in weatherization concepts or practices, including entry-level workers and residential construction trades seeking to expand their knowledge and services in energy efficiency. Successful graduates of the course are now preparing to take the Building Performance Institute Installer exams for Air Sealing and Densepacking (up-to-date insulation techniques).

"The MassGREEN Initiative at STCC is pleased to accept this generous donation from AT&T in support of curriculum development “said Jim Neveu, MassGREEN’s Director.  “This donation will go a long way toward assisting MassGREEN in the continued delivery of clean energy training courses that promote workforce development and help the state achieve its energy reduction goals."

Support such as the AT&T Foundation’s donation helps to develop new courses and offer additional training opportunities through MassGREEN.

“AT&T is proud to be supporting the MassGREEN program,” said David Mancuso, AT&T’s Regional Vice President in New England.  “AT&T is serious about supporting efforts that create jobs, promote economic development and benefit the environment.  The MassGREEN initiative addresses all of those challenges in a single program that delivers tangible results.”

Funded with a portion of carbon allowance permit revenues under the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and with ARRA stimulus funds awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, MassGREEN ensures that Massachusetts has the quantity and quality of workers and firms needed to reach Governor Deval Patrick’s ambitious energy efficiency goals.

Created by the Green Jobs Act of 2008, MassCEC’s mission is to foster the growth of the Massachusetts clean energy industry by providing seed grants to companies, universities, and nonprofit organizations; funding job training and workforce development programs; and, as home of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust, supporting the installation of renewable energy projects throughout the state.
