Resume Workshop

Every month, thousands of job seekers devote countless hours to painstakingly writing and rewriting their resumes and cover letters before finally sending them out into the world with high hopes.  The not-so-secret reality is that most of these resumes will be scanned quickly for a few seconds, and then discarded.  Many will never be scanned at all.  A few, however, will be tagged as "to be interviewed" and taken out of the pile of resumes.  You want to be one of those few, and we can help.

In this workshop, you'll learn that a good resume is:

  • A marketing tool, in a marketing campaign, embedded in a marketing strategy- not an autobiography of your work and education;
  • Built on the foundation of the first principle of effective marketing communication:  Know your audience;
  • Best preceded by a personal conversation with a hiring manager or contact that ends with the sentence "send me your resume";
  • Always specifically tailored to the individual you're sending it to;
  • Dependent on a high quality database of modules describing your knowledge, skills, experience and aptitudes in different ways;
  • Usually focused on what you can do and results you have achieved;
  • Sometimes read by a software program, not a real person, with important consequences for you;
  • Not a substitute for objectively being a great candidate for the job.

Students in the workshop will learn about the essential targeting, networking and information gathering steps that come before writing the resume and cover letter, and about the critical follow-up steps that come after.

This lively, fast moving workshop includes a brief lecture describing some background information about effective job search methods, practical examples of successful resume strategies, and plenty of time for questions and discussion geared to your personal needs.
