The DOE Office of Science has just released a Funding Opportunity Announcement for supporting individual research programs for scientists early in their careers.  Research programs in the following areas are eligible for support: Advanced Scientific Computing Research; Biological and Environmental Research; Basic Energy Sciences; Fusion Energy Sciences; High Energy Physics; and Nuclear Physics.  Approximately $25 million will be available for 30-50 awards.  The minimum award size is expected to be $150,000, and the average award size is anticipated to be $750,000.  The performance period will be 5 years.  Applications must be submitted through a U.S. academic institution.  Eligible applicants must be an untenured Assistant Professor on the tenure track at a U.S. academic institution as of the deadline for the application. No more than ten (10) years can have passed between the year the Principal Investigator's Ph.D. was awarded and the year of the deadline for the application.  A Letter of Intent is encouraged and should be submitted by August 3.

  • A Letter of Intent is encouraged and should be submitted by August 3.
  • Application deadline: September 1.
  • Applications should be submitted through DOE’s e-center at https://e-center.doe.gov.

There are several one-time actions you must complete in order to submit an application (e.g., obtain a Dun and Bradstreet Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number, register with the Central Contract Registry (CCR), register with the credential provider, and register with Grants.gov). See http://www.grants.gov/GetStarted. Use the Grants.gov Organization Registration Checklist at http://www.grants.gov/assets/OrganizationRegCheck.doc to guide you through the process. Designating an E-Business Point of Contact (EBiz POC) and obtaining a special password called an MPIN are important steps in the CCR registration process. Applicants, who are not registered with CCR and Grants.gov, should allow at least 21 days to complete these requirements. It is suggested that the process be started as soon as possible.
